Geographical Locations
Temperate grasslands are located north of the Tropic of Cancer (23.5 degrees North) and south of the Tropic of Capricorn (23.5 degrees South). The major temperate grasslands include the veldts of Africa, the pampas of South America, the steppes of Eurasia, and the plains of North America.
North America: the prairies of the Central Lowlands and High Plains of the US and Canada. The Palouse Prairie of eastern Washington state, the California grasslands, and the desert grasslands of the Southwest are also temperate grasslands.
Eurasia: the steppes from Ukraine eastward through Russia and Mongolia.
South America: the pampas of Argentina, Uruguay, and southeastern Brazil
Africa: the veld in the Republic of South Africa.
Prairie: An extensive area of flat or rolling, predominantly treeless grassland, especially the large tract or plain of central North America.
Steppes: The huge grasslands of Eurasia, chiefly in the Ukraine and Russia
Pampas: A vast plain of south-central South America extending for about 1,610 km (1,000 mi) from the lower Paraná River to south-central Argentina southwest of Buenos Aires.
Veld: Any of the open grazing areas of southern Africa.
